ASSE 6000 Series -Professional Qualifications Standard for Medical Gas Systems Personnel

Medical Gas Certification is a requirement in Florida and in most States throughout the country. Plumbing Companies in Florida who install, and repair these life safety systems, and equipment must be certified by an approved training agency that is certified by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board. These drug delivery systems that are installed by certified personnel shall maintain their certification by showing proof of brazing performance every 6 months. Learning brazing skills is one of the most important skills one must possess when installing medical gas and vacuum systems. We offer local classes instructed by United Service Training Corp. They have been conducting Medical Gas courses since 1995, and received CILB approval in 2000 when it became law in Florida. ASSE 6005 Standard -Medical Gas Systems General Information

This standard provides general knowledge of medical gas and vacuum systems for the purpose of providing continuing education. Eligible individuals include any person with an interest in medical gas and vacuum systems and equipment. This standard does not apply to those who work with medical gas systems as a Medical Gas Systems Installer per ASSE Standard 6010, Bulk System Installer per ASSE Standard 6015, Inspector per ASSE Standard 6020, Verifier per ASSE Standard 6030, Maintenance Personnel per ASSE Standard 6040, Medical Gas Systems Instructor per ASSE Standard 6050, or Bulk Systems Instructor per ASSE Standard 6055. Medical gas systems and equipment covered in this standard include health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99 Standard for Health Care Facilities. Medical gas systems include vacuum piping. Prerequisite; The individual shall be able to demonstrate a basic working knowledge of all terminology7 listed in the ASSE Standard 6001, as used in NFPA 99-2005 and other listed industry standards


ASSE 6010 Standard -Medical Gas Systems Installers

This standard applies to any individual who installs medical gas and vacuum systems. Medical gas systems and equipment covered in this standard include health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99-2005 standard for Health Care Facilities. Installers include anyone who works on or installs piping or components, including brazers. Medical gas piping systems include vacuum piping. The 32-hour course is designed to take an experienced plumber and teach them the information necessary to install medical gas and vacuum pipeline systems in human health care occupancies, including hospitals, office-based occupancies, nursing homes, dental facilities and outpatient care facilities. Topics include all facets of equipment such as air compressors, vacuum pumps; valves and hangers, and testing are covered as well as a section on the special brazing requirements for medical gas and vacuum tubing. Practical training is included, including student coupons that are sent to outside laboratories for independent examination. Topics also include the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). NFPA 99 is the textbook. The student should be working as a competent plumber working for a certified plumbing company or active in an apprentice program for at least four years. At the completion of the course, there is a standardized written examination as well as a brazing practical in which students will be required to braze vertical and horizontal full-penetration joints on 1-1/2″ tubing. The brazing coupons will be tested by an AWS independent inspector. This course follows the requirements of the American Society of Sanitary Engineering ASSE 6010 professional qualification standard for Medical Gas Systems Installers. Prerequisite; The candidates shall have a minimum of four(4) years of documented practical experience in the installation of piping systems. documented practical experience in the installation of piping systems.


ASSE 6015 Standard -Bulk Medical Gas Systems Installers

This standard applies to any individual who installs bulk systems for medical gas at health care facilities. Bulk systems for medical gas covered in this standard include health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99-2005 Standard for Health Care Facilities. Installers include anyone who works on or installs bulk systems or bulk system components, including brazers on bulk supply systems. Prerequisite; Candidates shall have documented practical experience in the installation of bulk systems in accordance with the firm’s SOP’s.


ASSE 6020 Standard -Medical Gas Systems Inspectors

This standard applies to any individual who inspects the installation of medical gas and vacuum distribution systems. Medical gas systems and equipment covered in this standard include health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99-2005 Standard for Health Care Facilities. Medical gas systems include vacuum piping. Prerequisite; Candidates for ASSE 6020 certification shall be employed by a governmental unit as a plumbing and/or mechanical inspector, or as an administrator of such inspectors; or be a person regularly involved in the design, inspection or verification of medical gas systems. Candidates shall have a minimum of two (2) Years of documented practical experience.


ASSE 6030 Standard -Medical Gas Systems Verifiers

This standard applies to any individual who tests and verifies the operation of medical gas and vacuum systems. Medical gas systems and equipment covered in this standard include health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99-2005 Standard for Health Care Facilities. Medical gas systems include vacuum piping. Prerequisite; Candidates shall have shall have a minimum of two (2) years documented practical experience in the verification of medical gas systems. Candidates shall have a current certificate of insurance, in the name of the individual or employing verification company, for general liability, and professional liability insurance.


ASSE 6040 Standard -Medical Gas Systems Maintenance Personnel

This standard applies to any individual who maintains medical gas and vacuum systems. Healthcare facility personnel installing medical gas or vacuum systems shall comply with ASSE Standard 6010. Medical gas systems include vacuum piping Prerequisite; The candidate shall be employed or contracted by a health care facility, or actively engaged in working with medical gas systems, and shall have one (1) year minimum experience in the maintenance of the medical gas system.


ASSE 6050 Medical Gas Systems Instructors

This standard applies to any individual who trains or teaches installers, inspectors, verifiers and healthcare facility maintenance personnel regarding medical gas and vacuum distribution systems. Medical gas systems and equipment covered in this standard include health care facilities within the scope of NFPA 99-2005. Medical gas systems include vacuum piping. Prerequisite; All Medical Gas Systems Instructors shall have a minimum of ten(10) years of documented experience in the installation of piping systems or a minimum of two(2) years of documented experience in the installation of medical gas and vacuum systems. Instructors shall have a minimum of two(2) years documented practical teaching experience. Instructors shall possess a current Medical Gas Systems Installer certification in compliance with ASSE standard 6010.
